Tips & Tricks

How to save energy (energy saving bulbs / always switch off)

Lighting makes up about 7% of the average home energy bill. It’s a factor of all homes that is currently undergoing a revolution – a new product hitting the market every few months which gives more light with less electricity. As such it’s an area in which it’s very easy to make changes that can significantly reduce  your annual payments.

Whenever an existing bulb blows, replace it with a Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) of the same strength. You will see no remarkable difference in the amount of light provided, but you will save around £3 a year. Not much? If we’re talking about a single bulb only, no, but if you place that saving across a dozen bulbs in your home, well, it soon adds up.

For spotlights and dimmer lights, we recommend opting for  Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). These modern light sources will save you even more.

It’s good practice to try to get the whole family into the habit of switching off lights when not in use – even for short periods.  Have  light switches conveniently positioned near doors and at both ends of hallways and employ the use of sensors or timers for outside lights.

Keep in mind,  with energy bills constantly creeping up you are not completely powerless  against them.  There are options, other ways to counteract  increased fuel costs. Even the little changes  we make to the way we live add up over time.
