Tips & Tricks
Prolong the life of your boiler (install a magnetic filter)
Central heating systems contain iron and steel components that over time will corrode. That corrosion produces a type of sludge that if left to build up will likely block up radiators, pipes and the boiler pump. This can cause overheating, eventually leading the boiler to shut down and a plumber will be needed to either power flush the system, or replace the heat exchanger.
To avoid the cost of this, it’s a good idea to install a magnetic filter. This collects the corroding material and traps it so it can’t damage the boiler.
How to install it? Adding a magnetic filter to an existing system is fairly easy so long as the boiler isn’t in a right awkward space then it may be difficult or impossible. You can also install a filter when you buy a new boiler.
Whenever you have your boiler checked, which should be annually, the magnetic filter can be cleaned at the same time.
