How to prevent frozen pipes
Frozen pipes are a big problem because when water freezes, it expands, and when it expands in a confined space, you end up with cracks and burst pipes. Here’s some steps you can take to avoid this situation.
Firstly, if you can, prevent the pipes becoming exposed to below-freezing temperatures. This is obviously easier said than done especially in older properties, however in some cases it’s worth asking a plumber if they can reroute pipes.
If not, then insulate vulnerable pipes with cladding, and fill in any gaps that could allow cold air to reach them. The materials needed are cheap and well worth the expense and trouble of fitting them.
It can also help to allow a slight trickle of water to stop pressure from building up.
Going on holiday
Every year many people unfortunately come home to water damage after an unexpected cold snap. The best solution is to drain the system. Simply turn off the main valve and then run every faucet in the house until they run out of water. Then there’s nothing to freeze. Just refill when you get home
If you suspect a frozen pipe (nothing coming from a faucet) – you should always call a plumber to deal with it.
