How to prevent blocked drains
Prevention
Take extra care to ensure that the only matter that goes down your drains is sewage or water. Most hardware stores stock drain screens, little grilles you can place over the drainage hole in the bath or sink ,and which catch soap scum, dry skin and hair. A quick clean after every shower or bath is all that’s required.
Never pour grease or lard down the sink or the toilet after cooking. It will just harden in the pipes and become extremely difficult to clear. Rather, let it cool and harden and then scrape it out into a bin. Food scraps and coffee grounds are another two common culprits that clog up and block kitchen drainage pipes. A good practice to get into is to Pour boiling water down the sink at least once a week. Doing so can clear minor blockages before they become more serious. Remember, many drain cleaning products contain harsh chemicals and are extremely corrosive. Such products invariably sit dormant in your pipework while they act on the blockage. This can damage or corrode the pipes, possibly creating a potential future problem.
Cure
If you have a blockage and want to attempt to clear it yourself then you should try to get hold of an auger (sometimes known as a snake) to do the job with. Though most people prefer not to get their hands dirty, and call a plumber!
