Tips & Tricks
Going on holiday / tips for plumbing
If you’re leaving town for a short period then turning off your mains water supply will remove any risk of returning home to a flooded floor. Unfortunately such floods are a common call-out problem for us plumbers. People go on holiday, leave their water mains open, along comes an unexpected cold snap which results in burst pipes and an expensive repair bill.
With that in light, turning off the mains supply before you jet off is good practice. So too having a quick sweep around the house, double-checking you haven’t left any taps running – especially with the plug in!
We also advise that you turn your central heating system down to minimum. There’s no point paying to heat the home if no-ones there. Still, just in the event of bad weather, it is wise not to switch it off altogether. Many modern boilers now have built-in timers so you can set your heating to come on for an hour every morning or evening, just enough to keep things ticking over.
Finally we suggest you inform a neighbour of your planned absence. Leave them a spare set of keys and the number of your preferred plumber London – just in case of an emergency.
