Simple Ways to Save Water image

4 Simple Ways to Save Water (and Save Money)

Author: Lee Devlin

Published on: 23/11/2018

When you consider how much we depend on water for many aspects of everyday life, it’s surprising how much of it we let go to waste. Fortunately, there are several ways to save water that require minimal effort and will even save you money.

Adopting a few small changes in the way you use water can make a big difference, especially as more and more people take note of the benefits saving water offers. Everyone has a different style of living and unique day-to-day circumstances, but there’s no doubt that everyone is guilty of wasting at least some water on a daily basis.

In this post, we’ll highlight a few of the simple ways to save water at home, none of which require any drastic life changes, and all of which can even save you a little bit of money in the process.

1. Turn off Taps When You’re Not Using Them

This is undoubtedly one of the most common ways water is wasted at home, as it’s all too easy to leave the taps running while you’re busy doing something else or distracted in another room. The main culprit for this is leaving the tap on while you brush your teeth — don’t worry, everyone does it!

Yes, having to turn the tap on and off every time you rinse your toothbrush can be annoying, but is it as annoying as a hefty water bill? We didn’t think so! Getting into the habit of turning the tap off when you walk away from the sink may take a while, but the amount of water you’ll save will be noticeable over time.

2. Maintain Your Plumbing

There are many, many aspects to consider when it comes to maintaining your home, but few are more important than your plumbing. Not only does efficient plumbing give you clean water and the ability to remove waste, but it also ensures that you’re not at risk of leaks or flooding due to poor maintenance.

If you are aware of a leak at home and have been putting off getting it fixed, there’s no time like the present. Hiring a reputable plumber will make sure that the issue is fixed, and you’ll also benefit from additional advice that can help to make your plumbing more efficient. One thing to look out for is a suspiciously high water bill, especially if it’s not a one-off (people make mistakes), as this could mean there’s a leak somewhere wasting all your water.

3. If It’s Yellow, Let It Mellow

Sounds disgusting, doesn’t it? But you can actually save lots of water if you only flush the toilet when someone has gone for a number two. Obviously, this might not go down well with every member of the household, but if you’re desperate to save water in any way you can, this is a simple way to do so. If you have a big family, the savings will add up considerably.

If your plan to let the yellow mellow is just one step too far, you could always invest in a low flush toilet, which uses a lot less water to flush. Even so, flushing the toilet less is your best bet to save more water and more money.

4, Take Shorter Showers

Take a minute to think about how much time you actually spend washing in the shower. Now, add up the amount of time spent daydreaming, singing, planning your next holiday or anything else that slips into your head. Unless you’re one of the few people that are actually able to have “a quick shower”, it’s safe to say that you’re wasting a fair amount of water.

A regular shower can be over and done within a matter of minutes — less than a minute if you’re in a rush — so there’s no need to stand around, literally, and let all that water go to waste. Not only does it cost you more money, but it also wastes a lot of time that could be used to be more productive or prevent you from being late to work in the morning. Shorter showers really are the gift that keeps on giving!

We have always had various faults with one lavatory, the most recent one was finding that it was constantly running water.
By luck, I found Homecure Plumbers, they are close to my work which is convenient. I emailed them, received a quick response from Shelley and a plumber was booked to come in the next working day. Kevin came and found that our cistern was leaking which was causing extensive damage. What I liked is that he also took time to show and explain what was happening.
Kevin left, not long after I received a quote for a new cistern plus the labour, we confirmed to go ahead and Kevin came back that same week and efficiently carried out the replacement. Everything is working great now.
Overall, a fantastic experience with this company whom I will definitely use again and would recommend.
Many thanks!
