Tips & Tricks

How to save energy (loft insulation / double glazing)

There are various methods you can take to keep heat inside your home, and two of the best are loft insulation, and double glazing.

Loft Insulation
Because heat rises, most heat in the home escapes through the roof. 270mm thickness of insulation is the ideal – your loft may already have some down in which case only a top-up is needed. Once it’s laid, you could enjoy savings of hundreds of pounds from your annual heating bill, with no need to replace it for around 40 years.

There are various types of insulationand techniques, depending on the ease of access to your loft, its shape, and what you use it for. You can raise the floor level, then lay boards down if you need it for storage; you can blow insulation in if it’s difficult to move around up there; you can pour in loose-fill insulation if your space is irregular. Talk to an expert to discuss your options and prices.

Note that damp and condensation issues can complicate things and need to be resolved first, or insulation will make them worse.

Double Glazing
So long as you don’t live in a period property or conservation area, you should be able to fit double-glazing to your windows. A secondary pane of glass not only cuts heat loss but also helps prevent noise getting in, meaning if you live near a busy road it’s a great idea.

It’s long-lasting, up to 20 years, and will not only save you money but also your carbon footprint. There are various types of glass, frame and manufacturer so if you’re considering installing double-glazing in your home then it’s worth doing your research first.
